George Graham Vest letters, 1886.

This collection contains a letter and a fragment of another letter by George Graham Vest expressing his regrets in declining an invitation to Frankfort's centennial in 1886. The letters were addressed to John L. Scott of Frankfort. One is on the U.S. Senate letterhead. Both concern the centennial celebration held in Frankfort in 1886 and Vest's inability to attend. Vest sent his best wishes for the occasion.

Vest was born in Frankfort in 1830. He received degrees from Centre College and Transylvania University. With his brother-in-law, Captain R.S. Triplett, Vest established the OWENSBORO BULLETIN in 1852, which was the second newspaper in that city. Vest served as editor and is known as the author of the essay "Tribute To A Dog," written for a lawsuit seeking damages for the death of a favorite dog.
